Cockroaches are a difficult pest to get rid of once they have found their way into your home. Often, the best course of defense with cockroaches is actually a good offense! Keeping cockroaches away from your home can be done in many different ways, many of which are simple and, as long as you are diligent, can be very effective at making your home very unappealing to a cockroach. Here are a few tips that we here at Quality Control, Inc. recommend to our friends and clients:
- Clean, clean, clean! Cockroaches are excellent at seeking out even the smallest of crumbs or scraps of food. They love areas that are hidden and tend to gather crumbs such as those behind the fridge, in the backs of cabinets and under the sink. Keeping your home as clean as possible, including in these areas, is a great cockroach prevention tool.
- Limit food to eating areas. When you have crumbs all over from wandering eaters, you are making it easy for cockroaches to find scraps and crumbs, while simultaneously making it harder for you! Keep food in the kitchen and dining for easier cleaning.
- Don’t forget about the pets! Cockroaches aren’t discerning between human food and pet food, so make sure that your pet food is only in a tight, sealed plastic container and watch for bits of kibble that didn’t make it to the bowl.
- Make the most of storage. Cockroaches love to find food, and cardboard or paper isn’t much of a deterrent. Keep your food in tightly sealed containers made of metal, glass, plastic or silicone for maximum protection.
